ummm why is the ambiguity of the english language a surprise to anyone here? people who spend hours arguing about how things aren't ironic are just as annoying as those who argue about what the word "coke" means? 09/26/2003-12:50pm
good point on the coke machines. and also the "i'm gonna get a coke," you have no reason to let them know the particular brand you're getting, as that would be all too specific, and most people wouldn't say soda. yeah really these are the only times one might say 'soda', but we substitute 'coke' instead, so it seems i have been corrected in this matter and been stripped of my doctorate in cokeology 09/26/2003-12:01pm
Appendix B: which is really something common for all requests, not just soda. if someone asks for some chips and you offer tricuits as a possible alternative, you're just being a kind host letting the person know that you have a vast arsenal of snacks ready for consumption. if someone asks for a beer and you say 'how about a white russian, i got some kahlua' or something you're not so much presuming that then all alcohol is called 'beer' but rather that, yes, beer is common, but i have a particular amenity available which you, the guest, might enjoy, if you so desire, just letting you know, dude. 09/26/2003-11:59am
its all bottled by coca-cola anyway. even this dasani water im looking at is. so its all really coke. you call it a coke machine, not a soda machine or pop machine. and if im going to go to said machine. ill say 'im going to get a coke' regardless of the fact ill either get sprite or dr pepper. but down south, regardless of whether we specify drinks or not, it is NEVER, i repeat NEVER a pop or soda. soda means soda water. 09/26/2003-11:57am
Appendix A: hmm, however, i could see asking, 'hey, can i have a coke' and then the person goes to the fridge, discovers they have both coke and mountain dew, and says 'coke or mountain dew?' in response, letting the person know they have a less frequent brand in their possession which the guest may take a particular liking to, or maybe just hasn't had in a while and misses the taste of, or whatever. but i'm not sure that's so much calling all soda "coke" as it is the person getting the coke informing the guest of the presence of other, less common brands. 09/26/2003-11:55am
however yes it is fair to assume that for all intents and purposes pepsi==coke. if you had pepsi or RC and someone asked for a coke you wouldn't ask if pepsi was ok because they taste almost identical. of course this works the other way, if some person asks for pepsi (maybe its your usual stock) but all you have is coke you'd give it to them without a second thought. but for other flavored drinks its different. and thus ends my thesis paper on people who falsly claim they or people in their region call all soda 'coke' 09/26/2003-11:52am
the person with the drinks would probably ask 'is sprite ok?' in response if that's all he had. people would definitely ask if diet soda was ok if that's all they had. most likely one wouldn't ask for the name coke as opposed to 'something to drink' or perhaps 'do you have a coke or something', which implyies any soda is ok, but coke being the most ubiquitous and always enjoyable is the most reasonable to ask for by name, even if you happen to like mountain dew more, because most people don't carry mountain dew. however, if you know they have mountain dew (you visit them often) you would surely ask for a mountain dew and not a 'coke'. 09/26/2003-11:49am
what I meant by the poll response was that a lot of people when sitting down to eat, say at a friend's place, will ask their friend, "hey do you have a coke?" and they really just mean whatever softdrink the person has is fine. I know plenty of people that do this. 09/26/2003-9:09am
That was Randalesque. Though I agree. 09/26/2003-9:03am
i hate people that claim everything is coke when nobody actually says that. people ask for a specific drink brand. they dont say 'gimme a coke' 'what kind?' 'sprite' if someone said 'gimme a coke' you would give them a fucking coke, not ask what kind. 09/25/2003-11:48pm
