no you need the social programs and unios to ensure everyone ends up equal, equally fucked 09/03/2003-8:55pm
You can't tamper with how companies are allowed to run they're business, create social programs, and bloated union systems and then say "pfft, well that's capitalism for ya!" when all the jobs disappear. it's like cutting the roof off of a mustang so that the people in the back seat can have the same headroom as the people in the front, and as soon as it starts raining and everyone gets wet saying "well that's Ford for ya!" 09/03/2003-5:57pm
the standard of living is high enough in the states and things are expensive enough that nobody could afford to live on what goes for a living wage in other places. but yeah it's capitalism pure and simple. they provide the same service for cheaper (the reason doesn't really matter) so they win. american jobs lose. i don't think anyone ever gave much of a crap about the "made in the u.s.a." thing unless they believed it was legitimately of higher value. but here we have an obvious case of higher value coming from sending workers overseas. it looks like things will continue this way until america becomes more isolationist, or until the standard of living spreads around like dissipating heat. 09/03/2003-4:41pm
actually it's not capitalism that's forcing jobs out of the country, it's the act of unions, increasing minimum wages, and free international trade. People don't look at a label that says "made in the u.s.a" quite the same way anymore, they don't really give a shit where it's made as long as it works. American companies can't compete and keep jobs in the country with all the disadvantages domestic labor poses. 09/03/2003-1:10pm
generations have grown up with much worse to influence them than the Real World. the incredible options and immediate information available to us has resulted in far less 'groupthink' than in previous generations, i assure you. this recession is nothing serious and is reasonable following such a long prosperity, but.. yeah i agree outsourcing sucks balls :( Capitalism at work! 09/03/2003-1:02pm
you missed my point though, I know you can just not watch/listen to bad pop culture, that's easy (and I certainly do this) but I'm talking about the generation growing up behind us that is most likely being over exposed to it. And the mass exodus of jobs still worries me. 09/03/2003-7:40am

oh, and i think the signal:noise ratio right now when it comes to arts and sciences is pretty low. there's some great music, film, authors, philosophy, what have you going on right now and you just have to know how to find it instead of mindlessly shelling out for the latest thing targeted at your demographic. 09/03/2003-3:51am
