as long as our government is non violently protesting, people like saddam dont think about changing their ways, they do as they please feeling lucky that we arent beating him down. Once we told him it was damn near time for war, he publicly dismantled a few missiles that he had been denying he even had for years, in an attempt to get us to go for non-violent protest. the simple fact that saddam was all in favor of having the UN sanctions and missile inspections shoutld tell you something about how effective they were. the sanctions actually gave him something to hide behind, it wasnt him starving the people, it was the sanctions, yet he shits on a toilet made of gold, which get plunged with a gold plunger if he backs it up. he didnt have to listen to any protests from within iraq, if you spoke out against him there, he tortured and killed you, your family and probably anyone unfortunate enough to hear waht you said. you can protest all you want, but after a time when that doesnt work, you have to be willing to back up what you say, put some foot to ass and make the world a better place when youre done. war sucks, theres no doubt about it, but it is an unfortunate necessity sometimes, it would be nice to live in a world without war, where everyone got a long and lived happily ever after. unfortunately for us we live on earth, not in a disney movie. war is not the answer to every problem, but it is the answer to some, and in this case there really weren't any other reasonable alternatives. since the war started, fewer people died as casualties of war, than would have died under saddams regime, and those that did weren't tortured for months beforehand. we did a good thing in iraq, and should be proud of it. 04/22/2003-6:41am
Deathrow = Cocaine 04/21/2003-10:52pm
Violence = FASTER! Yeah. 04/21/2003-10:52pm
Phil having too many drinks? Noooooooooooooo. 04/21/2003-10:49pm
eh, I think both sides have a great point. Unfortunately I think they are in the middle of different discussions. Non-violent forms of protest can be very effective, as minority protestors have shown numerous times in the past. However, when "getting punched in the face" means "5000 or so civilians are killed" how many times do you really want to wait before your assailant gets bored? -ryan 04/21/2003-4:54pm
the letter author mocks the philosophy of non-violence, the same philosophy preached by jesus, gandhi, and mlk. with regards to the war i dunno, but in terms of dismissing the philosophy as a whole as impractical, that's ridiculous. all three of those people kept taking beatings and never sent a fist back. and if that guy kept punching the protestor, and the protestor kept getting up and turning the other cheek, perhaps then the man punching would understand what an ass he's being. 04/21/2003-4:43pm
while MLK et al, and the US do have in common the fight for, amidst other things, individual human rights, the article was discussing the means by which we attain these rights for people. It poked fun at people that say there's a peaceful and diplomatic way out of everything, dispite the person you might be trying to deal with wanting nothing more than to keep punching you in the face. Someone, incorrectly as far as I'm concerned, read into this that the person who wrote the article would just as soon insult Gandhi. Gandhi was, unfortunately, not a world super-power so he couldn't exactly start a very successful military conflict with his oppressors. He found a way to get himself recognized and gain support in his movements. The key word is support. The US is not a monk. Hunger strikes are simply not going to accomplish anything for us. With the kind of people we are trying to remove from power, whose army will barely stand to fight for, it only makes sense to me to use force. 04/21/2003-3:39pm
Brunette eh? I think mayhaps you had a few too many drinks that night phil. 04/21/2003-3:07pm
I have seen gordanna and she is definately not that bad. Though I preferred the brunette. 04/21/2003-1:10pm
They also were about individual human rights and being free from oppression. Well thats what the US is doing, freeing people from a fucking dictator. Or should I say the US DID free people from a dictator. 04/21/2003-1:08pm
i'm sorry. the only oppressive majority in the united states is that of stupidity. it has far too many members for the minority to overcome. 04/21/2003-1:04pm
there's a difference between being an oppressed minority and being a majority that a minority thinks is evil. Gandhi and MLK were hardly in the position the US is. 04/21/2003-1:00pm
d00d i heard of this guy named gandhi, and some other guy named martin luther king. they were total pussies 04/21/2003-9:47am
